Howard West is moving on to his next challenge.

West, who is one of three coaches in North Carolina who has amassed more than 800 career wins over a career that has spanned five decades, has been named as the next coach at West Forsyth High School in Clemmons. West succeeds Rusty LaRue, who resigned recently after three seasons at the helm of the program.

West resigned as the boys coach at Forsyth Country Day last week, a position he has held for the last five seasons.

West, who just finished his 45th year of coaching, started at Tunstall (Virginia) during the 1973-74 season. He came to North Carolina in 1984 to coach at Eden Morehead, where he remained for four seasons before becoming the coach at R.J. Reynolds in 1988.

West guided the Demons to three straight NCHSAA 4-A state championships from 1999-2001 and a runner-up finish in 2002. He left Reynolds to start the program at Reagan when the school opened in 2005.

West picked up his 800th win in North Carolina in January against Charlotte Latin. He currently has 801 wins, which ranks second behind Freddy Johnson of Greensboro Day and the late Harvey Reid of Wilson Fike, who finished his career with 816 wins.
